No Senegal, de acordo com os dados da versão de 2019 do Inquérito Demográfico e de Saúde (EDS - 2019) publicado pela Agence Nationale de la Statistique et de la Démographie (ANSD), a proporção de mulheres que recorreram a uma instituição de saúde durante o parto aumentou de 62% em 2005 para 80% em 2019. No observatório de Niakhar, a utilização dos cuidados de saúde durante a gravidez e o parto evoluiu de forma bastante lenta ao longo do tempo. No SSDS de Niakhar, a taxa de utilização de cuidados de saúde durante o parto foi de 11% entre 1988 e 1992, 16% entre 1998 e 2002, 34% entre 2008 e 2012 e 57% em 2017, apesar de um nível aceitável de prestação de cuidados de saúde, mas com disparidades muito acentuadas entre unidades geográficas. A taxa de partos domiciliários no observatório de Niakhar é inferior à registada a nível nacional. O objetivo deste estudo transversal, descritivo e explicativo é identificar os factores que explicam a não utilização da assistência médica ao parto na zona do Observatório de Niakhar.
