A peste é uma doença emergente e reemergente negligenciada em comunidades pobres, nas quais a pobreza e a prestação de serviços de saúde são desproporcionais, especialmente em áreas remotas de África. Na Tanzânia, no período de 1953 a 2003, foram relatados um total de 8956 casos de peste, com 731 (8,2%) mortes, em dez distritos do país. No entanto, os papéis relativos de cada espécie de pulga e roedor na epidemiologia da doença no país ainda precisam ser estabelecidos. A fim de promover o desenvolvimento sustentável nessas comunidades e melhorar os padrões de vida da população, é necessário estabelecer sistemas e protocolos para verificar a presença de focos de peste, utilizando pulgas e roedores, que são os principais vetores e hospedeiros em humanos, respetivamente. Para reforçar isso, foi estabelecido o estudo.
