O poster relata os resultados do estudo que investigou as percepções dos professores sobre os factores que afectam as capacidades de leitura em isiXhosa dos alunos da Fase de Pré-escolar no distrito de Mthatha. Os professores da Fase Inicial de uma escola participaram no estudo de caso. O estudo explorou as percepções dos professores em relação aos factores que levam a uma fraca capacidade de leitura dos alunos em isiXhosa. Foi utilizada uma abordagem qualitativa com um projeto de investigação de estudo de caso para realizar o estudo. Os dados foram recolhidos através de entrevistas e analisados pelo programa N-VIVO. Na escola onde a investigação foi efectuada, havia falta de recursos, os professores não tinham formação adequada e os pais não estavam envolvidos. Os resultados do estudo revelaram que os professores da fase inicial carecem de conhecimentos especializados no ensino da leitura na língua materna. O envolvimento dos pais em relação ao desempenho dos alunos na leitura foi considerado fraco entre os pais sem instrução, que estão em minoria entre os pais dos alunos da escola; enquanto os pais dos alunos de famílias instruídas, que estão em minoria, expuseram os seus filhos a material de leitura.
