Vers 1605, dans un couvent du Paraguay, Reginaldo de Lizárraga achève un manuscrit commencé quinze ans plus tôt. Arrivé au Pérou à quinze ans avec ses parents, cet Espagnol a pris l’habit dominicain et parcouru pendant un demi-siècle les terres immenses qui vont de Quito au détroit de Magellan. Prieur, provincial, évêque, il a vu Lima au temps de sa cathédrale inachevée, Potosí à son apogée minière, Cuzco après l’exécution du dernier Inca. Il a vu Francis Drake entrer une nuit dans la rade du Callao, la fureur chiriguana submerger l’expédition de Toledo, les Mapuches du Chili insoumis tuer le gouverneur Loyola à Curalaba.Son livre est un inventaire vivant : villes, vallées, mines, couvents, vice-rois, Indiens, pirates et martyrs, décrits par un témoin qui a tout parcouru à dos de mule. Resté inédit pendant trois siècles, le manuscrit n’a été imprimé qu’en 1909 à Buenos Aires. Cette première édition en français moderne le restitue au lecteur d’aujourd’hui dans toute sa densité documentaire et littéraire, fidèle à la voix d’un homme qui a fait du Nouveau Monde sa demeure pendant soixante ans.L’ensemble est illustré de quinze gravures originales, accompagné de six cartes de l’Amérique coloniale du XVIe siècle, d’un glossaire des termes coloniaux, d’une chronologie de l’auteur et de son époque, d’un index des personnages et d’un index des lieux, ainsi que de morceaux choisis du texte original en espagnol.
