Este libro tiene su origen en cursos que dicta el autor desde hace más de una década en la Pontficia Universidad Católica de Chile y en otras universidades. Su objeto principal es aportar a que futuros profesionales comprendan mejor el contexto económico y social en el que les tocará desenvolverse, y los desafíos que este implicará tanto en políticas públicas como en la gestión de empresas. El libro está estructurado en dos partes: en la primera, se discuten las grandes tendencias que enmarcan las posibilidades de un desarrollo sostenible a nivel global; en la segunda, se aterrizan estos desafíos a la realidad chilena, poniendo especial atención en la marcada especialización económica en los bienes y servicios que brinda la naturaleza. En esta publicación se enfatizan tres aspectos críticos, a saber: los problemas demográficos, los patrones de consumo y la necesidad de mejora en eficiencia en el uso del capital natural acelerando la transición energética y deteniendo la deforestación. Un tema que atraviesa estas páginas es la particularidad de la época que nos ha tocado vivir: nunca en la historia de la humanidad nuestro planeta había experimentado cambios tan profundos y rápidos producto de la evolución de una especie que, en pocas décadas, ha demostrado su capacidad de llevar la vida a otros lugares del cosmos, pero también de destruirla aquí en el planeta. 10
