Der Wiener Narrenturm, eröffnet 1784, steht am Beginn der modernen Anstaltspsychiatrie. Seine Geschichte blieb bis dato jedoch größtenteils unerforscht. Dieser Band widmet sich als erstes Werk der vollständigen Geschichte des Wiener Narrenturms und erforscht dabei das größere psychiatrische Versorgungsnetzwerk, in dessen Zentrum er stand. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Buches ist es, ein differenziertes und faktenuntermauertes Bild der frühen niederösterreichischen Psychiatrie von 1784 bis 1870 zu zeichnen. Es liefert eine umfassende Darstellung aller während dieser Zeit als Irrenanstalten genutzten Gebäude, präsentiert Statistiken zu Anzahl, Geschlecht, Sterblichkeit und Krankheitsbildern der behandelten PatientInnen und beschreibt die wechselnde Rezeption der Einrichtungen in der Öffentlichkeit.  Die Arbeit plädiert für einen faktenbewussten Geschichtsdiskurs und möchte einen Beitrag zur Aufklärung über die Entstehung der modernen Psychiatrie leisten.
