Was geschieht mit unserer Seele nach dem Tod? Ist der Tod ein Schrecken oder Segen? Im 18. Jahrhundert, in einer Zeit des Umbruchs, in der Ereignisse wie die französische Revolution und der französische Bürgerkrieg dem Thema eine tragische Aktualität verliehen, wurden die Fragen nach Tod und Jenseits erneut aufgeworfen und diskutiert. Auch Johann Gottfried Herder hat sich als bedeutender Philosoph und Theologe des 18. Jahrhunderts mit diesen Fragen beschäftigt. Seine Ausführungen haben dank seines Einflusses schon zu damaliger Zeit in vielen Bereichen der Kunst und der Wissenschaft Spuren hinterlassen. Der Tod und seine Bedeutung für den Übergang der Seele in andere Welten spielt in Jean Pauls 'Hesperus' eine entscheidende Rolle. So setzt sich beispielsweise die Hauptfigur Viktor intensiv mit diesen Themen auseinander. Zum einen geschieht dies auf der theoretischen Ebene, in die Viktors Kenntnisse der Medizin mit einfließen, zum anderen muss er das Sterben seines Freundes und Lehrers Emmanuel erleben und dessen Sichtweise anerkennen. Emmanuel erhofft sich von seinem Tod die endgültige Befreiung seiner Seele aus seinem von Krankheit gemarterten Körper. Der vorliegende Text erörtert, inwieweit sich die durch Herder repräsentierten Vorstellungen von Sterben und Tod im Hesperus verbildlicht finden.
