Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863- 1935) war ein Britischer Journalist, Lokalhistoriker und Kriminalschriftsteller. Neben historischen und wirtschaftlichen Betrachtungen seiner näheren und weiteren Heimat veröffentlichte Fletcher auch über 200 Kriminalromane. 1914 debütierte er mit einem solchen; seine erfolgreichsten waren eine Reihe mit Abenteuern des Privatdetektivs 'Ronald Camberwell'. Aus dem Buch: 'Cotherstone schaute ratlos ins Leere, nachdem Kitely ihn verlassen hatte. Vor drei Monaten war dieser Mann zu ihm ins Büro gekommen und hatte sich für ein kleines Haus interessiert, das Cotherstone zu vermieten hatte... Cotherstone hatte als vielbeschäftigter Mann nicht weiter darüber nachgedacht, und er hätte es sich niemals träumen lassen, daß gerade dieser Fremde ihn und Mallalieu schon vor dreißig Jahren gekannt hatte. Es war Cotherstones eifrigstes Bemühen gewesen, die Vorgänge jener Zeit zu vergessen, und es war ihm auch fast gelungen, sein Gedächtnis einzuschläfern. Aber nun hatte Kitely wieder alles geweckt. Sein Gesicht wurde düster, als er über den einen dunklen Punkt in seiner Vergangenheit nachdachte.'
