Ziel dieses Buches ist es, den postmodernen Kontext in der Kunst durch eine analytische Bestandsaufnahme des Werks einiger Maler (darunter Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Eric Fischl und Anselm Kiefer) nachzuzeichnen, die in diesem Zeitraum nicht nur international in Erscheinung traten, sondern ihn auch ästhetisch abgrenzten. Vielleicht ist dies das Hauptinteresse des Essays, der die Begriffe Avantgarde und Post-Avantgarde neu diskutiert, ihren historischen Hintergrund analysiert und die euro-amerikanische Malerei der 1980er Jahre als Erbe einer großen Krise darstellt, in der der künstlerische Diskurs selbst in Frage gestellt wurde und - dank eines Prozesses zunehmender formaler Radikalisierung - in einer Art symbolischer Apathie endete.
