El autismo es un trastorno del desarrollo que afecta el procesamiento de la información. Las personas con autismo tienen dificultades con las habilidades sociales y de comunicación. Tienen intereses restringidos y presentan comportamientos repetitivos. También suelen experimentar sensibilidad o malestar ante la estimulación sensorial, como ciertas luces o sonidos.Debido a que los síntomas del autismo varían mucho, se dice que esta condición se presenta en un espectro, conocido como Trastorno del Espectro Autista. El síndrome de Asperger se refiere al autismo de 'alto funcionamiento', pero ya no es un término diagnóstico formal.El autismo suele manifestarse antes de los dos años. Según los CDC, se diagnostica cuatro veces más frecuentemente en varones que en mujeres, aunque a menudo se pasa por alto y se diagnostica erróneamente a las mujeres.
