Democracy and Constitutional Politics in Iran is a thorough analysis of the struggle of Iranian people for representation and democratic government. The analysis uses Weber’s theoretical framework to make sense of the confounding reality that after over a hundred years of struggle the Iranian people are less free today than they were a century ago. Malek-Ahmadi traces the transformation of Iran from a predominantly Sunni society into a Shiite country in 1501 when the formal interweaving between religion and politics began, exploring the tragic missed opportunity during the Constitutional Movement to separate the two. Ending with a focus on recent decades, Malek-Ahmadi provides an explanation of obstacles to democratization with an optimistic view of future prospects for Iran.
