La disabilità di apprendimento (LD) è una carenza inspiegabile di risultati in aspetti specifici del linguaggio o della matematica, nonostante il bambino sia entusiasta dell’apprendimento con un QI medio o superiore alla media. Colpisce i bambini delle scuole inferiori, superiori, secondarie e terziarie di tutto il mondo. Il 24% dei bambini delle scuole primarie regolari in Kenya è affetto da LD. La sua causa è associata a fattori estrinseci nell’ambiente di apprendimento. Se non viene aiutata, la LD rende i bambini disincantati, sviluppa una bassa autostima e finisce per abbandonare la scuola. L’identificazione e l’intervento efficaci avvengono all’età di 9 anni (classe 3). L’identificazione precoce avviene attraverso la diagnosi differenziale, che elimina la possibilità di avere problemi visivi, uditivi e mentali. Osservazione attraverso un’associazione più stretta; raggruppamento dei sintomi che indicano un disturbo del linguaggio o della matematica e raccomandazione di una valutazione specializzata o di seguire la storia della famiglia. Ostacoli a un’efficace identificazione precoce: scarsa formazione degli insegnanti in materia di LD nei licei ordinari, sovraffollamento dovuto all’FPE con conseguente elevato rapporto alunni-insegnanti che ostacola la stretta interazione insegnante-alunno, limitando l’identificazione precoce attraverso l’osservazione ravvicinata.
