Les pièces de Shakespeare et la Commedia dell’Arte, théâtre improvisé né au XVIe siècle en Italie, sont deux formes distinctes de représentation qui ont des origines, des personnages et une structure communs. Bien que les chercheurs modernes puissent se référer au Folio de 1623 comme source documentaire pour l’œuvre du Barde, la commedia était improvisée depuis ses origines jusqu’à la fin de la vie de Shakespeare, ce qui empêche toute comparaison des dialogues. Nous disposons toutefois d’illustrations de représentations de la commedia dans le Recuil Fossard, réimprimé dans The Italian Comedy de Ducharte. Cet ouvrage tente de rassembler des exemples tirés de ces œuvres et de nouveaux éléments, permettant ainsi aux chercheurs modernes de reconnaître les similitudes entre ce qui semble à première vue être des formes théâtrales très différentes.
