La croissance du revenu par habitant et l’urbanisation observées au cours des dernières décennies, ainsi que les prévisions pour les prochaines décennies, indiquent un besoin croissant en denrées alimentaires dans le monde. On observe également peu de possibilités d’expansion des zones agricoles, une baisse des taux de productivité agricole et un certain épuisement des technologies lancées au cours des dernières décennies. Le Brésil est l’un des rares pays au monde à disposer d’un espace pour étendre sa production sur de nouvelles terres, même si les limites sont proches. Dans ce contexte, le présent travail a cherché à analyser comment la croissance de la demande mondiale de produits alimentaires brésiliens entre 2012 et 2024 devrait augmenter la demande de nouvelles terres productives au Brésil et comment la productivité devra s’ajuster pour répondre aux nouvelles demandes et aux restrictions légales sur l’utilisation des terres dans le pays, afin de répondre à ces demandes futures et de garantir la sécurité alimentaire à long terme. À cette fin, le présent travail a passé en revue la littérature sur les restrictions à l’utilisation des ressources naturelles et la croissance de l’offre, ainsi que les changements démographiques et géographiques estimés pour les prochaines décennies.
