Il Carme nacque come reazione all’editto napoleonico di Saint-Cloud che imponeva l’edificazione fuori le mura cittadine dei cimiteri e l’uniformità delle sepolture. Il Foscolo nel suo testo pone però in questione l’idea di fondo dell’editto, rivalutando con maestria poetica le antiche tradizioni funebri e l’importanza del sepolcro come mediazione e rapporto con i defunti. Della presente edizione illustrata sono stati realizzati 103 esemplari aventi la stessa tiratura della prima edizione avvenuta a Brescia nel 1807. Questi esemplari numerati sono stati realizzati con carta riciclata e copertina di cartone color avana.
