A prevenção, o tratamento e os cuidados do VIH/SIDA entre os adolescentes são baixos e inadequados quando comparados com outros grupos das populações nacionais africanas (OMS 2013). Existem elevadas taxas de morbilidade e mortalidade neste grupo etário, especificamente devido à ’fraca atribuição de prioridade aos adolescentes nos planos nacionais de VIH/SIDA, à prestação inadequada de serviços acessíveis e aceitáveis de despistagem, aconselhamento e tratamento do VIH/SIDA e à falta de apoio aos adolescentes para que permaneçam sob cuidados e adiram à terapia antirretroviral’ (OMS 2013). O quadro de ecologia política utilizado para informar este livro foi útil para revelar as teias de causalidade e as relações humanas no âmbito dos cuidados de saúde e das estruturas socioculturais com que as crianças e os adolescentes que vivem com VIH se envolvem. A Antropologia Médica, que carece em grande medida de investigação anterior relacionada com o VIH no Zimbabué, é uma plataforma importante para envolver investigação etnográfica genuína e quadros teóricos abrangentes, com ênfase na implementação e aconselhamento sobre a viabilidade de intervenções centradas na criança. As crianças e os adolescentes devem ser envolvidos em todas as fases, determinando a viabilidade das intervenções de cuidados de saúde para o VIH que eles próprios estão a formular.
