Lo scopo di questo studio è stato quello di esplorare l’evoluzione delle opere teatrali di David Hare e David Rabe, concentrandosi sui loro drammi verbali, per arrivare a comprendere il loro successo come drammaturghi del dissenso popolare in Gran Bretagna e negli Stati Uniti nella seconda metà del secolo scorso e nel primo decennio del XXI. La popolarità di Rabe e Hare presso la maggior parte del pubblico, nonostante i temi pessimistici e anti-establishment delle loro opere, può essere attribuita a un fattore principale: sono in grado di insinuare un gruppo di persone, un governo, un Paese o addirittura il mondo intero utilizzando solo pochi personaggi unici, articolati ed empatici. Forse la differenza principale tra Rabe e Hare riguarda la relazione tra il linguaggio e il sé. Nelle opere di Hare, i personaggi sono definiti da ciò che dicono. Il linguaggio offre loro l’identità di sé e rivela la maggior parte dei loro bisogni inconsci. Per lui, quindi, lo strumento linguistico facilita lo scambio di pensieri e sentimenti. Tuttavia, la percezione di Rabe del linguaggio è molto diversa. Nelle sue opere, i personaggi usano lo scambio verbale per nascondere più che per rivelare emozioni e idee. Spesso usano il linguaggio come paravento per nascondere il loro vero io.
