Das Buch stellt die vierte Auflage des Werks 'Datenfernübertragung. Einführende Grundlagen der Kommunikation offener Systeme' dar. Es wurde erheblich überarbeitet. Stil und grundsätzlicher Aufbau (Orientierung am OSI-Referenzmodell) bleiben erhalten. Es gelten im Wesentlichen die Grundsätze, die bei den vorherigen Auflagen vorlagen. Allerdings werden jetzt WAN und LAN gleichmäßig eingeführt und behandelt. Die dem Internet zugrunde liegenden Protokolle werden viel stärker als in den vorigen Auflagen behandelt.
