Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775-1854) widmete seine philosophische Laufbahn dem Bestreben, das System des Absoluten zu verwirklichen, tat dies jedoch in vollem Bewusstsein der Tatsache, dass das Absolute letztlich kein logisches System, sondern eine lebendige Wirklichkeit ist. Dementsprechend ist für Schelling „das Leben das Kriterium der Wahrheit'. Obwohl seine Kritiker sein Denken oft als fragmentarisch und vielgestaltig abtaten, bemerkte C. S. Peirce in einem Brief an William James, dass es gerade Schellings „Freiheit von den Fesseln des Systems' und seine Bereitschaft, sich philosophischen Ideen eher experimentell als dogmatisch zu nähern, waren, die er am meisten bewunderte: „Darin gleicht er einem Wissenschaftler.' Dieses Buch, das vor dem Hintergrund eines wiederauflebenden Interesses an Schellings Werk sowie inmitten einer globalen ökologischen Notlage und geopolitischen Krise verfasst wurde, schöpft aus dem tiefen Fundus seines Denkens in der Hoffnung, dass es den Versuch der menschlichen Zivilisation unterstützen kann, sich neu zu erfinden. Schellings Philosophie liefert viele der anthropologischen, theologischen und kosmologischen Ressourcen, die notwendig sind, um eine alternative Form der Moderne hervorzubringen, die nicht länger auf die Zerstörung der Erde und den Zerfall menschlicher Gemeinschaften ausgerichtet ist.
