Der Bauhausarchitekt Walter Gropius und der Dramatiker Erwin Piscator entwickelten in der deutschen Zwischenkriegszeit das gemeinsame Projekt „Totaltheater'. Ihr Ziel war es, das Theater wiederzubeleben und das Publikum in den Theaterprozess einzubinden. Das vorherrschende Konzept der Guckkastenbühne war ihrer Meinung nach veraltet und verhinderte durch die sogenannte Vierte Wand jede Kommunikation zwischen Bühnenraum und Zuschauerraum. Mit einem neuen Raumkonzept und der Einbeziehung technischer Neuerungen planten sie das Theater zu revolutionieren und das Theaterpublikum in der Vorstellung zu aktivieren.
