Joseph Smith Fletcher (1863- 1935) war ein Britischer Journalist, Lokalhistoriker und Kriminalschriftsteller. Neben historischen und wirtschaftlichen Betrachtungen seiner näheren und weiteren Heimat veröffentlichte Fletcher auch über 200 Kriminalromane. 1914 debütierte er mit einem solchen; seine erfolgreichsten waren eine Reihe mit Abenteuern des Privatdetektivs 'Ronald Camberwell'. Aus dem Buch: 'Obwohl ich also stets zur Stelle war, kann ich mich nicht erinnern, daß man mich jemals außerhalb der Bürostunden gerufen hätte; erst Anfang Februar 1921 wurde ich eines Morgens um halb sieben von jemandem angeläutet, der sich als Mr. Watson Paley, Privatsekretär Lord Cheverdales, vorstellte. Er wollte wissen, ob er mich in einer höchst dringlichen Geschäftsangelegenheit um dreiviertel acht aufsuchen könne. Ich antwortete, daß ich zu seiner Verfügung stehe.' 3
