„Das Porträt von Frauenfiguren in den wichtigsten Kurzgeschichten von Kate Chopin und Flannery O’Connor' befasst sich damit, wie Schriftstellerinnen die Erfahrungen von Frauen durch literarische Produktion darstellen. Kate Chopins ‚The Story of an Hour’ und ‚Athénaïse’ sowie Flannery O’Connors ‚Good Country People’ und ‚A Stroke of Good Fortune’ sind ein Fallbeispiel für diese Darstellung. Unter Berücksichtigung des Ansatzes „Images of women' (Frauenbilder) habe ich gezeigt, wie Chopin und O’Connor die Erfahrungen ihrer weiblichen Protagonistinnen (Mrs. Mallard, Athénaïse in „The Story of an Hour' und „Athénaïse' und Hulga und Ruby Hill in „Good Country People' und „A Stroke of Good Fortune') in ihrem sozialen Umfeld im 20. Jahrhundert darstellen. Zu Beginn der oben genannten Kurzgeschichten zeichnen die Autorinnen die weiblichen Protagonistinnen als lebendige Wesen, die aktiv zu sein scheinen, Träume haben und sich auf bestimmte Weise ausdrücken, selbstbewusst und unabhängig sind. Am Ende der Kurzgeschichten zeigen die Autorinnen, wie die gesellschaftlichen Sitten und Normen sie beeinflussen und sie zu stimmlosen Frauen mit erloschenen Seelen und verflüchtigten Träumen werden lassen.
