Cynara

'Cynara: Photoplay Title of an Imperfect Lover' is a poignant and dramatic exploration of fidelity, guilt, and the social mores of early 20th-century Britain. Written by Robert Gore-Browne, the novel delves into the life of Jim Warlock, a successful and respected London barrister whose stable existence is upended during his wife’s absence. What begins as a seemingly fleeting indiscretion with a young shopgirl, Doris Lea, soon spirals into a tragic entanglement that threatens to destroy his marriage, his reputation, and his sense of self. The narrative masterfully captures the tension between private desires and public duty, examining the heavy cost of a momentary lapse in judgment. Taking its title from Ernest Dowson’s famous poem-specifically the refrain 'I have been faithful to thee, Cynara! in my fashion'-the work serves as a haunting meditation on the complexities of love and the permanence of consequence. Gore-Browne’s prose offers a sharp critique of the rigid class structures and moral expectations of the era, providing a psychological portrait of a man caught between two worlds. This compelling story of a 'well-meaning' man’s downfall remains a significant example of early modern social drama, having achieved further fame through its successful adaptations for both the stage and the silver screen. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
