Le Tamilnadu est un lieu géographique stratégique qui détient une part importante de la culture et de l’exportation de plus de 50 plantes médicinales.Comme les cultures traditionnelles ne sont plus économiques pour les agriculteurs des terres arides, les plantes médicinales sont plus demandées sur le marché et s’avèrent très rémunératrices que les cultures traditionnelles des terres arides. Certaines des plantes médicinales qui sont cultivées dans les terres incultes de l’État sont le séné (Cassia Angustifolia), la pervenche (Vinca Rosea), le Coleus (Coleus Forskholii), le Keelanelli (Phyllanthus Niruri), Sadavari (Asparagus Racemosus), Solanum médicinal (Solanum Khasianum), Aswagantha (Withania Somnifera), Aloe (Aloe Vera), Glory Lily (Gloriosa superba) et Poonaikali (Mucuna Pruriens). Bien quela culture du séné soit répandue dans de nombreuses régions du Tamil Nadu, la plante Gloriosa Superba a été choisie pour une étude détaillée car elle est concentrée dans le district de Karur. Gloriosasuperba est cultivée par un grand nombre d’agriculteurs dans les régions d’Aravakurichi, Darapuram, Dindigul, K. Paramathi et Markampatti, Moolanur et Oddanchatram.
