Cuba should be the Gem of the Caribbean. It has the people, the location, the culture, and the potential. What it has never had - not for a single generation in five centuries - is the genuine freedom to pursue its own destiny.Cuba - In the Grip of Empires: It Began with the Spanish Crown is the story of how that happened. Beginning with Columbus dropping anchor off the northeastern coast of Cuba in October 1492 and ending with the island’s current crisis, it traces an unbroken five-hundred-year pattern: one empire’s grip becoming another empire’s leash, the names changing while the extraction continues. Each chapter is anchored by a single person whose decisions shaped Cuba’s trajectory. Columbus, who claimed the island for Spain without understanding what he had found. Hatuey, the Taíno cacique from Hispaniola who fled Spanish brutality to Cuba, warned the island’s people what was coming, and was burned at the stake for refusing to convert. Jacques de Sores, the French pirate who sacked and burned Havana in 1555 and forced Spain to finally take its most valuable Caribbean possession seriously. The Earl of Albemarle, who led the British siege of Havana in 1762 - one of the largest amphibious operations in history - and held the city for eleven months before trading it back to Spain for Florida. José Martí, Cuba’s greatest literary and revolutionary figure, who spent decades in exile building the intellectual case for independence and died in the first skirmish of the war he organized. And El Morro - the fortress that watched it all - as the final narrator of a story that has not yet ended.Following each narrative chapter is a section called History Beyond the Story - timeline verification, source documentation, and historiographical debate that separates documented fact from reasonable inference, for readers who want to dig deeper or verify the record. The author walked the streets of Havana in September 2025 before finishing this book. What he found was a population of extraordinary resilience living under the weight of a pattern established five centuries ago and never truly broken - only transferred from one set of hands to another.Cuba libre has been the cry for 170 years. This book explains why it has not yet been answered.Available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook in English and Spanish.
