Hoje, na Rússia, existe uma espécie de 'vácuo criminológico'. Os cursos de criminologia ainda são baseados em pesquisas de 70-90 anos do século XX, ou seja, estão desesperadamente desactualizados. Algumas questões actuais não são de todo consideradas nelas. Muitas vezes o curso de criminologia é estruturado como o curso de direito penal. O grande problema não só da criminologia mas também da ciência em geral é o seu isolamento das realizações teóricas e práticas do mundo. Durante muito tempo os criminologistas domésticos tentaram ignorar ou negar o papel dos estudos estrangeiros. Esta, é claro, é uma posição fundamentalmente errada. O crime não pode ser considerado dentro de um único aspecto. Apenas na totalidade das funcionalidades se pode chegar a uma determinada solução. O crime é um problema global, por isso qualquer desenvolvimento no campo desta área não deve passar despercebido.
