Les résultats de l’analyse des études d’événements pour un échantillon des plus importantes transactions en valeur dans l’industrie du pétrole et du gaz au cours des années 2013-2014 ont confirmé qu’en général, les fusions et acquisitions dans l’industrie du pétrole et du gaz créent de la valeur ajoutée. L’effet des facteurs spécifiques à la transaction (financement de la transaction, prime d’acquisition), à l’entreprise (taille de la transaction, pays) et au secteur (segment de l’industrie, prix du pétrole et justification stratégique de la transaction pétrolière et gazière) sur la création de valeur a ensuite été évalué. Un certain nombre de conclusions importantes pouvant être utilisées par les entreprises pétrolières et gazières dans leur processus décisionnel pour augmenter leurs chances de créer de la valeur ajoutée par le biais de fusions et acquisitions ont été tirées.
