A aprendizagem começa quando o aluno já é capaz de associar conhecimentos prévios a conjuntos de ideias e aplicações. As variedades de estilos de aprendizagem manifestam-se pelas diferenças entre os indivíduos, nomeadamente em termos de capacidade intelectual, ambiente de aprendizagem, interesse, etc. Os hábitos de estudo são a forma como um aprendente efectua a aprendizagem mental. O hábito de estudo é simplesmente a forma como se estuda. Os hábitos de estudo podem ser bons ou maus. É opinião geral que, atualmente, os estudantes não dedicam tempo suficiente aos seus estudos e raramente criam um esquema para melhorar o seu desempenho académico, particularmente em Matemática. Esta investigação centrou-se na correlação entre os hábitos de estudo dos estudantes e o seu desempenho em álgebra intermédia. Os inquiridos viviam numa zona rural, o que teve influência nos seus hábitos de estudo porque, na maioria dos casos, ajudavam a trabalhar no campo. Produzem colheitas para se alimentarem ou para venderem, o que lhes consome o tempo de estudo. É difícil desenvolver bons hábitos de estudo. No nosso mundo competitivo, é necessário ter uma boa formação em matemática. O progresso é lento sem uma boa base em matemática.
