Selon l’EPA américaine, les établissements commerciaux génèrent une grande partie des 31,4 millions de tonnes de carton ondulé estimées jetées chaque année . Une fois déposé dans la poubelle ou le bac de recyclage, ce carton est appelé vieux carton ondulé ou OCC. En 2008, on estime qu’environ 77 % des boîtes en carton ont été recyclées ou réutilisées. Cependant, les fibres qui composent le carton raccourcissent à chaque fois qu’elles sont réduites en pâte, ce qui signifie que le carton ne peut être recyclé que quatre à cinq fois avant de se désintégrer. Les déchets de carton qui en résultent finissent dans les déchets solides municipaux (MSW). Nous proposons un processus efficace pour convertir les déchets de carton en polymères à valeur ajoutée, respectueux de l’environnement et biodégradables, tels que le polyhydroxybutanoate (PHB). Ce travail comprend (i) un processus optimisé de prétraitement des déchets de carton, (ii) une hydrolyse enzymatique pour la conversion des déchets de carton en glucose, (iii) la biosynthèse et la caractérisation du PHB.
