A região dos Himalaias possui uma grande riqueza de plantas medicinais com pessoas que possuem conhecimentos medicinais tradicionais. As plantas medicinais têm desempenhado um papel importante no sistema de cuidados de saúde primários entre a população local da região dos Himalaias. Desde tempos imemoriais, os Himalaias são famosos pela sua rica biodiversidade de plantas medicinais e aromáticas. A variação dos solos, a topografia e a ocorrência de diferentes zonas climáticas e microclimáticas da região proporcionam condições muito favoráveis para o cultivo de uma série de espécies de plantas medicinais importantes do ponto de vista terapêutico. O Uttarakhand compreende 13 distritos da região de Kumaun e Garhwal, 8 distritos montanhosos conhecidos coletivamente como Uttarakhand Himalaya, situados no centro da região noroeste dos Himalaias. Os Himalaias de Uttarakhand possuem um rico património de flora medicinal e aromática. Várias ervas possuem princípios odoríferos e são utilizadas como matéria-prima para as indústrias fitoquímica, farmacêutica, de perfumaria, alimentar, de condimentos e de aromas.
