La Constitución política de Colombia de 1886 estuvo vigente desde finales del siglo XIX hasta finales del siglo XX y fue derogada por la Constitución política de la República de Colombia de 1991. Fue proclamada durante el mandato del entonces presidente de la República, Rafael Nuñez. Su principal redactor fue el político y escritor Miguel Antonio Caro.Cabe destacar que la Constitución política de Colombia de 1886:tuvo fuerza legal el 5 de agosto de 1886 y sustituyó a la Constitución política de los Estados Unidos de Colombia de 1863, que tenía un carácter liberal. Creó un Estado unitario, administrador en el aspecto social y económico, confesional al considerar la fe católica como religión oficial. Prohibió de forma explícita la esclavitud y proclamó que cualquier esclavo sería libre por el solo hecho de pisar el territorio de la República.Estableció, además, períodos presidenciales de seis años, reemplazó el sistema federal y estableció a los departamentos como forma de administración territorial de Colombia.
