In Nepal, è incluso come specie protetta nel National Park and Wildlife Conservation Act del 1973. La popolazione stimata di 107-145 elefanti indiani in Nepal è suddivisa in quattro aree geografiche: 7-15 elefanti nel Terai orientale, 25-30 elefanti nel Terai centrale, 60-80 elefanti nel Terai occidentale e 15-20 elefanti nell’estremo Terai occidentale.
