Atualmente já não é possível entender o comércio apenas como a troca de bens por bens entre diferentes países; o desenvolvimento de novas formas de organização produtiva como as cadeias globais de mercado, ou seja, a localização em várias áreas geográficas de diferentes segmentos de uma mesma cadeia de produção, deu origem a outro tipo de comércio como o Comércio Intra-Industrial (CII), ou seja, o comércio dentro da mesma indústria. O trabalho que se apresenta de seguida procura analisar a concorrência entre os EUA e a China no sector das autopeças mexicano, com base nos fluxos de CII entre o México e estes países, e assim compreender as dinâmicas que surgiram nesta indústria mexicana entre 2000 e 2013.
