Pesquisas na Europa e no Extremo Oriente revelam que os contrastes nas conceções de aprendizagem e abordagens de estudo retratam as orientações futuras de aprendizagem entre os estudantes do ensino superior. De acordo com essa pesquisa, os estudantes que adotam o contraste profundo - aprendizagem transformadora - são aprendizes mais bem-sucedidos do que aqueles que adotam o contraste superficial - aprendizagem passiva, mecânica e raramente sustentável. Verificou-se que alguns estudantes adotavam o contraste estratégico, focando-se na obtenção de notas altas, em vez de benefícios de aprendizagem futuristas. Pesquisas semelhantes foram negligenciadas entre estudantes de Educação Técnica (ET), mas as rápidas incertezas e mudanças tecnológicas do século XXI também afetam a aprendizagem e as perspetivas futuras desses estudantes. Um projeto de pesquisa quantitativa exploratória, utilizando questionários adaptados do Inventário de Abordagens de Competências de Estudo para Alunos (Entwistle, 2006) e um cronograma de observação, auxiliou na recolha de dados. O alfa de Cronbach foi de 0,707 para Conceções de Aprendizagem e 0,64 para Abordagens de Estudo. A conclusão tirada foi que a formação em ET incentivou os alunos a aprender e estudar de forma estratégica, mais do que a aprendizagem transformativa. A revisão vigilante e regular do currículo de ET é vital.
