Atualmente, são utilizadas várias abordagens para prolongar os tempos de permanência gástrica, incluindo sistemas de administração de fármacos flutuantes, sistemas de dilatação e expansão, sistemas bioadesivos poliméricos, sistemas de forma modificada, sistemas de alta densidade e outros dispositivos de esvaziamento gástrico retardado. As formas de dosagem gastro-retentivas (GRDF) de libertação sustentada oral oferecem muitas vantagens para os medicamentos com absorção a partir das partes superiores do trato gastrointestinal e para os que actuam localmente no estômago, melhorando a biodisponibilidade do medicamento.
