O Visual Basic possui um controlo WinSock que permite a ligação de hosts numa rede e suporta TCP. A especificação Windows Sockets define duas interfaces: API utilizada por programadores de aplicações, e a API garante que uma aplicação em conformidade funcionará corretamente com uma implementação de protocolo de conformidade de qualquer fornecedor de software de rede e SPI, que fornece um meio para programadores de software de rede adicionarem novos módulos de protocolo ao sistema.
