Esta tese descreve um Japão que foi duramente atingido por uma catástrofe natural, que perturbou não só o país enquanto tal, mas também as relações interpessoais. Com base numa análise de artigos de jornal e num inquérito realizado pelo próprio, são examinados dois fenómenos relativos à compreensão do casamento no Japão após o grande terramoto de 11 de março de 2011. Tanto os casamentos como os divórcios nessa altura foram motivados pelos acontecimentos que rodearam o terramoto. As razões para tal são analisadas neste trabalho, a fim de traçar um retrato da sociedade japonesa nessa altura.
