O objetivo do nosso trabalho foi determinar a distribuição da diabetes segundo o sexo, a idade e as complicações renais, e estudar certos parâmetros bioquímicos dos perfis glicémico e renal de pessoas com diabetes e/ou nefropatia diabética (n=65). Verificámos que o risco de nefropatia diabética era mais elevado nas mulheres do que nos homens e que 11% tinham desenvolvido complicações renais. 86% tinham níveis de glucose no sangue em jejum acima do normal, e os níveis de glucose no sangue eram mais elevados nos doentes com ND (2,52±0,95 g/l) do que nos doentes sem ND (1,92±0,72 g/l). 85% dos doentes apresentavam valores de HBA1c acima do limiar e a média de HBA1c era mais elevada nos doentes com ND (9,2±2,24%) do que nos doentes sem ND (8,28±1,60%). Além disso, 47% apresentavam hipercreatininémia, dos quais 11% com ND e 7% com hipocreatinémia. A hiper-uricemia estava presente em 56% dos doentes, dos quais 15% tinham ND, e 45% dos doentes tinham hiper-uricemia, dos quais 10% tinham ND.
