Il mercato internazionale è una variabile che deriva dagli eventi che attraversano le economie nazionali. Questa è la premessa di questo studio. L’apertura del commercio in Brasile tra la fine degli anni ’80 e l’inizio degli anni ’90 non è stata un evento isolato. Praticamente tutti i Paesi hanno seguito questo approccio per trarre i benefici dei progressi tecnologici dei Paesi sviluppati. Ben presto, però, ci si è resi conto che si stavano trascurando aspetti della concorrenza che giocavano a sfavore dei potenziali guadagni delle economie in via di sviluppo. In Brasile si è cercato di aprire gradualmente il commercio estero, abbandonando il modello di crescita economica basato sulla politica di sostituzione delle importazioni. Questo studio analizza gli effetti dello sviluppo tecnologico e dei modelli di concorrenza internazionale in un contesto di apertura del commercio estero. Per il caso brasiliano, i margini di protezione dell’economia nazionale contro la concorrenza esterna sono stati calcolati osservando i gradi di riduzione delle tariffe e delle barriere non tariffarie e i loro effetti sull’economia brasiliana in questo periodo.
