Experiments have always been used in research to test scientific theories. However, the laboratory experiment - which investigates cause-and-effect relationships in an isolated environment - is repeatedly subject to criticism. This criticism mainly focuses on the artificial nature and lack of realism of the laboratory setting, which is why researchers often turn to field experiments, which capture actual behaviour as observed in the real world. This work provides a behavioural economics-oriented comparison that analyses both methods from different perspectives, outlines their similarities and differences, and highlights and explains their distinct advantages and disadvantages; it can therefore be regarded as a sound basis for comparing the two methods.
