Cet ouvrage rassemble une collection unique de documents personnels créés sous le communisme, dans lesquels d’anciens enfants polonais astreints au travail forcé racontent leur expérience de la guerre. Une analyse comparative de ces documents avec des témoignages récents révèle que ces documents offrent une description plus nuancée des Allemands et contiennent des informations plus riches sur les conditions de travail spécifiques et la routine quotidienne des enfants que les documents contemporains. Une lecture comparative des témoignages d’archives et de leurs équivalents publiés montre que la rationalisation d’une version publiquement acceptable du passé sous le communisme s’est faite dans les deux sens, c’est-à-dire en mettant parfois en avant le contenu de propagande des formulations autobiographiques, mais aussi en minimisant cet élément à d’autres moments. Cette collection nous permet de mieux comprendre les expériences de travail forcé des enfants pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en particulier la manière dont les enfants ont perçu cette expérience, et offre un aperçu de l’appropriation négociée de l’idéologie communiste au niveau individuel.
