This paper seeks to discuss the founding of the Paraíba Film Documentation Centre (NUDOC), within the context of ’modernisation’ resulting from the expansion policies of the Federal University of Paraíba, which encouraged the growth of research and intellectual production spaces linked to the perspective of reflection and intervention in the regional reality. NUDOC boosted film production and became an important locus of intellectual and technical training for many filmmakers who are still active today. We also seek to indicate the paths of this film production, while also observing the criticisms that arose in relation to the ideological and aesthetic choices adopted in the context in question. We analyse some of the films made by the Centre, relating them to the concept of historical culture, based on the understanding that the relationships established by film production participate in the constitution of cultures, reaffirming or rejecting hegemonic perspectives present in the constitution of society.
