Este trabalho é uma contribuição para ter um material didático que se concentra nos tópicos contidos no programa da unidade de aprendizagem de Ciência dos Materiais e Ensaios que é ensinado na Secção de Estudos de Pós-Graduação e Investigação (SEPI) da Escola de Engenharia Mecânica e Eléctrica (ESIME) Unidade Azcapotzalco do Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), México.Apresentam-se os conceitos fundamentais para compreender e desenvolver as bases da referida unidade de aprendizagem, como fonte de apoio para o estudo e análise dos temas abordados, que se apresentam numa grande diversidade de materiais ferrosos e não ferrosos presentes no sector industrial. Além disso, grande parte dos conceitos apresentados são acompanhados de exemplos aplicados ou relacionados com a área da engenharia mecânica, considerando-se que o desenvolvimento de textos como o presente proporciona um método satisfatório e útil para a resolução de problemas que podem ser encontrados em diversos sectores industriais.
