Charles V le Sage (1338-1380) est considéré comme l’auteur de la consolidation de la dynastie valoisienne, après la double défaite militaire de Crécy et de Poitiers. Par le choix des dates, l’auteur veut mettre l’accent sur ces deux décennies faites de difficultés et de désastres pour les rois Philippe VI et Jean II le Bon, grand-père et père du Dauphin, tous deux vaincus par les Anglais, mais aussi pour le jeune Charles, obligé de prendre les rênes du pouvoir en l’absence de son père, alors qu’il n’était pas du tout préparé à le faire et qu’il n’avait encore de ce rôle qu’une connaissance théorique et livresque et qui fut confronté aux exigences croissantes de la bourgeoisie parisienne et de son chef de file, le Prévôt des marchands, Etienne Marcel.
