Stopy aluminium są coraz częściej wykorzystywane do produkcji części dla przemysłu motoryzacyjnego. Głównymi przyczynami tego trendu są potrzeba zmniejszenia emisji gazów zanieczyszczających środowisko i oszczędność paliwa poprzez zmniejszenie masy komponentów. Jest to możliwe dzięki zastosowaniu stopów utwardzanych wydzieleniowo za pomocą obróbki termicznej lub termomechanicznej, co umożliwia uzyskanie wysokiego stosunku wytrzymałości mechanicznej do masy. Spośród stopów aluminium poddawanych obróbce cieplnej, te z serii 6XXX są najłatwiejsze do wyciskania i spawania. Stopy te mają jednak niższą wytrzymałość mechaniczną niż stopy serii 2XXX i 7XXX stosowane w przemyśle lotniczym. Aby przezwyciężyć to ograniczenie, niedawno opracowano stop 6013 o wyższej zawartości miedzi i większej wytrzymałości mechanicznej niż tradycyjne stopy serii 6XXX. Aby wyprodukować komponenty z tych stopów, jednym z procesów stosowanych w przemyśle jest spawanie iskrowe wytłaczanych profili aluminiowych, z różnych powodów, od optymalizacji mikrostruktury i właściwości mechanicznych po opłacalność operacyjną i ekonomiczną.
