Es ist heute notwendig, Strategien zur Erhaltung der genetischen Ressourcen von Nutztieren in verschiedenen Formen einzuführen. Die dort aus verschiedenen Quellen gesammelten Informationen, nämlich sozioökonomisches Wissen, indigenes Verständnis und indigene Gegebenheiten, Produktionssystem, phänotypische, genotypische und molekulare Studien, können auf fruchtbare und produktive Weise genutzt werden, um Maßnahmen für Erhaltungsstrategien zu unterstützen und aufrechtzuerhalten. Die morphologische und genetische Charakterisierung einheimischer Schafrassen ist von immenser Bedeutung und kann durch das Verständnis und die Untersuchung der genetischen Zusammenhänge innerhalb der Population mittels Analyse der Allelfrequenzen an verschiedenen Loci erreicht werden. Zu diesem Zweck werden häufig eine Reihe von genetischen Markern wie VNTRs, SNP und SSR verwendet. SSR-Marker können verwendet werden, um fundierte Ergebnisse für die Untersuchung der Struktur und Zusammensetzung einer bestimmten Population zu erhalten. Aufgrund von Merkmalen wie Neutralität, hohem Polymorphismus, Kodominanz und gleichmäßiger Verteilung auf genomischer Ebene werden Mikrosatelliten häufig bei verschiedenen Arten zur genetischen Charakterisierung eingesetzt. Mikrosatelliten (SSR) sind äußerst variable Loci, die ausreichende genetische Informationen liefern.
