Uno de los casos la desplaza hasta el hospital La Esperanza de Málaga, donde ingresó un inmigrante que encontraron abandonado en una cuneta de la N-320 con síntomas similares a los de la enfermedad.Paralelamente Marcos Esterlín, su padre y director del diario Expresión, muere junto a su esposa en un accidente de coche mientras trabajaba en un caso de escándalo financiero.Tres años más tarde, su hermana, la periodista Jennifer Esterlín, que nunca creyó la versión oficial del accidente, encuentra en Marruecos pistas que podrían confirmar sus sospechas y avisa a su hermana para que se ponga en contacto con su antiguo colaborador en la policía, el comandante del NBQR, Víctor Servade. Éste enviará a Marruecos a uno de sus hombres con la orden de traerla de vuelta a casa.
