Questo libro, un caso di studio condotto in Bangladesh, illustra la valutazione della gestione della cataratta infantile e analizza il risultato visivo post-operatorio dei pazienti. Si compone di dati secondari e primari sperimentati su 500 occhi con cataratta di 300 bambini. Nei pazienti di età inferiore ai 2 anni sono state eseguite irrigazioni e aspirazioni, compresa la capsuloressi posteriore primaria con vitrectomia anteriore. Gli autori ritengono che il riconoscimento precoce e l’intervento chirurgico precoce siano cruciali nella gestione della cataratta infantile; tuttavia, la capsuloressi posteriore primaria e la vitrectomia anteriore sono considerate un passo obbligatorio in tutti i pazienti di età inferiore ai 5 anni, poiché riducono con successo l’opacizzazione dell’asse visivo. Inoltre, la chirurgia è solo un intervento nella serie di passi necessari per ripristinare la visione del bambino. Una correzione ottica tempestiva, un’adeguata assistenza post-operatoria e un regolare follow-up sono anch’essi parte integrante della gestione. Questo studio aprirà ulteriori frontiere per i futuri ricercatori in questo settore e contribuirà a sradicare la maledizione della cecità infantile da tutto il mondo.
