Este livro, um estudo de caso realizado no Bangladesh, ilustra a avaliação da gestão da catarata infantil e analisa o resultado visual pós-operatório dos doentes. Consiste em dados secundários e primários que foram experimentados em 500 olhos com catarata de 300 crianças. Nos doentes com menos de 2 anos, foram efectuadas irrigação e aspiração, incluindo capsulorrexis posterior primária com vitrectomia anterior. Os autores consideram que o reconhecimento precoce e a cirurgia precoce são cruciais no tratamento da catarata infantil; no entanto, a capsulorrexis posterior primária e a vitrectomia anterior seriam reconhecidas como passo obrigatório em todos os doentes com menos de 5 anos, uma vez que reduzem com êxito a opacificação do eixo visual. Além disso, a cirurgia é apenas uma intervenção na série de passos necessários para restaurar a visão da criança. A correção ótica imediata, os cuidados pós-operatórios adequados e o acompanhamento regular são também parte importante do tratamento. Este estudo abrirá novas fronteiras para futuros investigadores nesta área e contribuirá para erradicar a maldição da cegueira infantil em todo o mundo.
