A catalogação online e o uso da catalogação de acesso público online são uma tendência atual na prática da biblioteconomia e da ciência da informação. Os resultados deste estudo revelaram as várias áreas de catalogação online praticadas nas bibliotecas universitárias de universidades federais selecionadas no sul da Nigéria, os recursos envolvidos, os métodos empregados, os problemas e as estratégias. O interesse dos estudiosos mudou da catalogação de documentos tradicionais usando o livro de regras AACR2, um compêndio de princípios e técnicas para catalogação de materiais físicos impressos e não impressos, para a ênfase em recursos eletrónicos e coleções baseadas na Internet, daí a catalogação online e o uso de catálogos de acesso público online.
